Current Projects of the CISS
2010 marks an important year the CISS as it embarks on several diverse projects. We are currently working on three publications in the fields of bioethics, Shi'a scholarship and history. In addition, we are submitting statements to the UN and presenting papers at academic conferences. Click 'read more' to find out more information about these projects.
Read more »New additions to the Library
Ending 2009, CISS Library has been expanding to include almost 1000 Arabic and English works, many of which are primary works and essential to reading lists for Islamic Studies. Recent acquisitions include Engaging the Muslim World by Juan Cole, Shi'ism in America by Liyakat Takim, Avicenna by Lenn Goodman.

On Monday 14th December a member of the CISS research team attended a research event at Chatham House that discussed the issue of Kirkuk and the disputed territories between the Republic of Iraq and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

On Wednesday 25th November the Director of the CISS along with researchers from the Centre attended a members event at Chatham House which was titled ‘Iraq: Prospects for the election and beyond’.
Read more »House of Lords seminar on Saudi Arabia and civil liberties
On Monday 7th December 2009, CISS researchers attended the House of Lords seminar entitled, "Is the kingdom of Saudi Arabia prepared to defend Human Rights, Civil Liberties and Fight Terrorism.” The event was well-attended and the panel consisted of: Lord Ahmad (chairperson), Daniel Kawczynski MP - the Conservative Party for Shrewsbury and Atcham, Dr. Mai Yamani - author and a research fellow at the Royal Institute for International Affairs in London - Professor Madawi Al-Rasheed at the Department of Theology and Religious Studies in King's College, Michael Thoma - Director General at The Middle East Association and Robert Lacey - Journalist, historian and author.
