On Monday 8th February 2010, Professor Hugh Kennedy gave a lecture at SOAS, London entitled, ‘Feeding the Five Hundred Thousand: The Food Supply of Baghdad in the Early Islamic Period.’ The lecture focused on whether it was historically possible to feed five hundred thousand people in places such as Baghdad, Samarra and Qum.

The council for Arab-British Understanding (CAABU) held a lecture by Dr Maha Azzam, Associate Fellow, Chatham House on Political Islam on February 8 2010.
The lecture took place at the House of Commons and was chaired by Colin Breed, MP. Dr Azzam concentrated on the idea that political Islam was not a violent Islam and that militant movements were a by product of economic circumstances. She looked to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt as an example of an Islamic movement that concentrated on da’wa through education and charity rather than violence.

On Thursday 21st January 2010, Imranali Panjwani attended a seminar at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London entitled, ‘Debating Shi’i philosophy in Qum.’ The seminar was conducted by Dr.Sajjad Rizvi (senior lecturer at the University of Exeter) who presented a paper on the various interpretations of philosophy in Qum and more generally, in Islam.
